Privacy Policy

GapWalk ("we", "our", or "us") is an Android walking tracker app. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data. We are committed to keeping your information private and secure.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information when you use GapWalk:

Account information (via Firebase Authentication, including optional Google sign-in):

• Your name and email address
• Your Google profile picture
• A unique user ID provided by Google

Walk data (collected during walk sessions):

• GPS coordinates and route path
• Walk distance and duration
• Step count (via device motion sensors)
• Start and end timestamps of each session

Device information (collected automatically):

• Device operating system and version
• App version

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Authenticate you and maintain your account
• Record, display, and store your walk sessions and history
• Sync your walk data across your devices via our backend service
• Show your walking route on the in-app map
• Improve the performance and reliability of the app

3. Location Data

GapWalk uses your device's GPS to track your walk route and calculate distance. Location access is only active while you are recording a walk session. If you enable background location, GapWalk uses location in the background, when the app is not in use, only during an active walk so tracking can continue if you lock your screen or switch apps.

Your GPS coordinates are stored locally on your device using SQLite and may be synced to our secure backend server. We do not share your location data with any third party.

4. Data Storage

• On-device: Walk sessions and routes are stored in a local SQLite database on your phone.
• Backend server: Session data may be synced to our secure server at api.gapwalk.com for backup and cross-device access.
• Firebase services: Authentication is handled through Firebase Authentication. We do not store your password outside Firebase.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell or share your personal data. The only third-party services involved are:

• Firebase Authentication - for account authentication and session management. Google sign-in remains governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
• Google Maps - to display the map background in the walking screen. No walk data is sent to Google Maps.

6. Data Retention

Your walk data is retained as long as your account exists and you have the app installed. You may delete individual sessions from within the app at any time. To delete your account and all associated data, contact us at the email below.

7. Children's Privacy

GapWalk is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with their information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your account and all associated data
• Withdraw consent for location access at any time via your device settings

9. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) between the app and our backend server. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of GapWalk after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
